Eagles Complete the Hollywood Heist

Just when you think they’re done, they pull you right back in. The Eagles picked up a 30-23 win in LA over the Rams. First off, I have to admit, I was not expecting this at all, I had just about no faith we could win this game. Thank God I was wrong.

The Eagles entered this game as 13.5 point underdogs and no one really had any faith this struggling team could beat one of the league’s powerhouses and Carson Wentz being ruled out with a fractured vertebrae certainly did not help. Never the less, the Eagles came out Sunday night and did their thing. They showed the energy and hunger they have been lacking all year. Nick Foles had a decent game with 270 yards and 1 INT, but the offensive gameplan around him was another thing that has been lacking allyear. Doug was committed to the run game and drew up a good amount of deep shots for Foles to take. If Doug had been calling plays all year like he did tonight, this could be a whole different year. Foles also did a very good job of spreading the ball around, one critique of Carson Wentz this year was force feeding Zach Ertz. In the run game Josh Adams rushed 15 times for 28 yards and 1 TD, Wendell Smallwood rushed 10 times for 48 yards and 2 TDs and Darren Sproles rushed 3 times for 30 yards. Alshon Jeffrey was brilliant in this game, catching 8 passes for 160 yards. Golden Tate caught 5 passes for 43 yards and Zach Ertz caught 3 passes (including his 100th reception of the year) for 22 yards. The offense looked good tonight.

The defense definitely surprised me. Jared Goff had 339 yards and 2 INT’s, not an ideal game considering the secondary he was up against. In his last 2 games Goff now has 0 TDs and 6 INTs, not very good. Todd Gurley was held under 50 yards rushing, but had 2 TDs and 76 receiving yards. Maddox and Graham are the ones who picked up the INTs on Goff. Maddox looking like a very promising young DB, no matter which position he plays. Malcolm Jenkins and Rasul Douglas also played very well in the secondary. Fletcher Cox picked up 1 sack, 2 QB hits and was bringing the pressure all night.

So this means the playoff hopes are still alive, which I was not expecting AT ALL. One negative to this win is sports talk radio is going to be littered with “Trade Wentz” and “Foles > Wentz” takes for at least the next week, and that will most certainly suck. Next up the Eagles face the Texans at home. Considering we beat the Rams, I’m a lot more confident about that game now. Hopefully Foles will get into a groove and the whole team will keep up the energy and hunger they had in this game. If there’s one thing you need to learn about Philly, it’s this; don’t count us out.
