NFL Week 1 Recap

Week 1 of the NFL Season was filled with plenty of shock and awe, from Aaron Rodgers’ single handed 24 point comeback on a bum knee, to Khalil Mack absolutely obliterating the Packers’ offense in the same game, let’s take a look back at the scores, stats and highlights of the week.

Eagles 18, Falcons 12

⁃ After a 45 minute rain delay, the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles beat the Atlanta Falcons in an ugly 18-12 victory. RB1 Jay Ajayi ran for both touchdowns, and the Eagles ran Philly Special 2.0, much to the dismay of Atlanta fans.

⁃ On the last play of the game, Matt Ryan throws a last second heave into the endzone to his star WR Julio Jones, who catches it out of bounds.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48, New Orleans Saints 40

⁃ Ryan Fitz”Magic” went off for 417 passing yards, 4 passing TDS and 1 rushing TD.

⁃ Drew Brees & Alvin Kamara’s efforts were not good enough as the Bucs pulled off a stunning upset.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Minnesota Vikings 24, San Francisco 49ers 16

⁃ Kirk Cousins threw for 2 TDS in his Minnesota debut, handing SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo his first loss in 8 starts.

⁃ The Vikings forced 4 turnovers.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Baltimore Ravens 47, Buffalo Bills 3

⁃ The Ravens absolutely massacred the Bills at home, with Joe Flacco throwing 3 TDS to 3 different receivers.

⁃ The Bills were held to 33 (Yes, THIRTY-THREE) yards in the first half and had 0 first downs.

⁃ In his third NFL start, Nathan Peterman went 5 for 18 with 24 yards and two interceptions for a QB rating of exactly 0.0.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Jacksonville Jaguars 20, New York Giants 15

⁃ LB Myles Jack scored on an interception return early in the 4th quarter, killing any momentum New York had.

⁃ Saquon Barkley made his debut as the Giant’s RB1, scoring a 68 yard touchdown late in the game to bring NYG within 5.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

New England Patriots 27, Houston Texans 20

⁃ Brady threw for 277 yards and 3 TDS, hitting his star TE Rob Gronkowski with 1.

⁃ The Gronk TD came 3 plays after Deshaun Watson fumbled a handoff on the Texans first offensive play.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Miami Dolphins 27, Tennessee Titans 20

⁃ In the longest game in NFL history (by a long shot), the Dolphins pulled out a win.

⁃ The game lasted 7 hours and 8 minutes, thanks to 3 hours and 59 minutes of delays due to lightning.

⁃ Tight end Delanie Walker was carted off the field with an injury.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Cincinnati Bengals 34, Indianapolis Colts 23

⁃ The Bengals’ backup safety knocked the ball loose from the Colts’ tight end with seconds to go in the game, ending returning QB Andrew Luck’s hopes of winning his first game back after an extensive injury.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

Pittsburgh Steelers 21, Cleveland Browns 21

-In his first NFL start, James Conner stepped up big time in Le’Veon Bell’s absence. Antonio Brown also crossed the 10K yard mark.

-The ‘new look’ Browns team also played very well. On offense the passing game was their go to, they couldn’t get anything going on the ground and as a result Tyrod Taylor was their leading rusher. On defense they picked Big Ben off 3 times.

-The Browns forced OT with a beautiful TD catch from Josh Gordon. In OT they had a chance to hit a FG and win the game with under a minute remaining and it was blocked. The Browns ended their losing streak by still not winning. 0-0-1 is the best start for the Browns since 2004.

-Stat Highlights:

Kansas City Chiefs 38, Los Angeles Chargers 28

– Patrick Mahomes first NFL start certainly went well for him. He lead the Chiefs to this win with some help from Tyreek Hill, who was absolutely electric.

-The Chargers were also good offensively. Rivers and Allen had good days, Gordon was decent.

-Stat Highlights:

Washington Redskins 24, Arizona Cardinals 6

-Adrian Peterson and Alex Smith had themselves a day in their debut with the Redskins. RB Chris Thompson also had a solid day

-The Cardinals couldn’t get anything going on either side. Bradford was bad and Johnson was a non-factor. Defensively, they couldn’t stop anything.

-Stat Highlights:

Denver Broncos 27, Seattle Seahawks 24

-Case Keenum’s debut with the Broncos wasn’t terrible, but could’ve been better.

-A pretty high scoring game, but it was a lot of defense. 5 total INT’s

-Stat Highlights:

Carolina Panthers 16, Dallas Cowboys 8

-The Cowboys, not looking too hot. Dak couldn’t really get anything going, seems like he was doing a check down every play. He was also sacked 6 times.

-Zeke also didn’t really get too much going.

-The Panthers played pretty well on both sides. Good game from Cam.

-Stat Highlights:

Chicago Bears 23, Green Bay Packers 24

⁃ Khalil Mack, in his first game as a Bear, went off. He became the first player since 1982 to have a sack, interception, touchdown, fumble recovery and forced fumble in one half. The Raiders slapped themselves in the face.

⁃ Mack’s efforts were in vain. After leading 20-0 at half, and injuring Aaron Rodgers, the Packers QB came back and threw for 3 TDS, which along with a field goal, put Green Bay over Chicago in a stunning comeback.

⁃ Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in football.

⁃ Stat Highlights:

New York Jets 48, Detroit Lions 17

-Sam Darnold’s first NFL pass was a pick 6, but he bounced back in a huge way. He looked like a franchise QB.

-The Jets defense decimated Matthew Stafford, causing 4 INTs. Matt Patricia’s Head Coaching debut definitely didn’t go the way he was hoping.

-Stat Highlights:

Los Angeles 33, Oakland Raiders 13

-The debut of the loaded Rams defense got off to a slow start, but dominated in the second half.

-Derek Carr was pretty bad, but Cook had a solid night. Cooper was a non-factor. Marshawn Lynch had an amazing run where he and his O-Line pushed through the whole defense.

-Todd Gurley and Jared Goff looked great and Brandin Cooks was solid.
