Report: Phillies interested in Orioles Veteran Closer

Trade speculation is continuing to heat up as we move closer to the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline, and thanks to a 51-40 record on the year the Phillies will be active buyers looking to upgrade for the second half pennant race. We all know the Phillies want Baltimore superstar Manny Machado, but there is another Oriole who may very well end up in Phillies pinstripes this month: closer Zach Britton. According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, a source tells him Phillies front office officials have spoken to Baltimore about acquiring the veteran closer. Britton, 30, is just coming back from a ruptured Achilles injury. After a bit of a shaky return (6 ER, 12.2 IP) Britton has been more of the dominant closer he’s been over the course of his career (5 shutout innings over his last 5 appearances.)Salisbury reports a package including Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco could be used to acquire the two time All-Star from Baltimore. Franco, who overall has been a disappointment in his tenure with the Phils never living up to the superstar hype, is putting together a solid season batting .274 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs on the year. With Baltimore almost certain to move Machado before the deadline, having Franco would be extremely enticing for them to have on the left side of the infield.Although the big superstar the Phillies really want from Baltimore is Machado, Salisbury reports the asking price right now is “too steep.” The most likely situation is that the Phillies will hold off on getting him until the offseason where the Phillies will have no problem meeting the financial demands of the star.Acquiring Britton would require far less of a return and would give the Phillies great depth in the ‘pen which they certainly need.Like Machado, Britton would be a rental piece as he’s entering free agency this winter. The Phillies are in a pennant race, will be buyers at the trade deadline and are certainly fun to watch.Isn’t this fun?Be Bold.Written By: Seamus Doyle Twitter: @saintseamus, @UDawgSportsFeature Image Source: ESPN.com
