The Phillies this morning granted infielder Ryan Flaherty his unconditional release after he triggered an opt-out provision in his contract. The Phillies were forced to either add the veteran to the 40-man roster or grant him his unconditional release.
Because Pedro Florimon has already been added to the clubs 40-man roster, Phillies officials decided to go with the latter.
Flaherty should have no trouble landing with another club quickly as he has had a tremendous spring at the plate for the Phils hitting .353 in 38 plate appearances.
Rumors are already swirling that Flaherty could end up back with the Orioles where he has spent the bulk of his big league career serving as a valuable utility infielder.
